Village of FontanaJames Van Slyke built his cabin in 1836 in section 14 which was to become known as Fontana. Other early settlers include: Cumming, Montague, Douglass, Warren, Joy, Chambers, and Wright. Matthias Mohr named the area Fontana in 1838. The park was set apart in about 1871. Carlos S. Douglass built a grist-mill in 1857. He also platted the village in 1895, but village life had been there much earlier. In 1891, the women of the Congregational Aid Society built a union church. Early postmasters were James B. Davis and Oscar E. Davis.
