Early businesses were the postoffice as of 1839, a tailor, and general stores.
A Presbyterian society was formed in 1839-40.
The first town meeting was held April 5, 1842 and lists the following families
as being there: WILLIAMS, KINNEY, WHEELER, MAGOON, MEAD, PIKE, BISHOP,
CLARKE, BIRGE, ROBINSON, PRATT, PRINCE, VAN HORN, WORKMAN, PARSONS, BROWN,and
NIEMANN
In 1842 a cemetery was laid out.
1842 also brought the Baptist society, 1844 St. Patrick's Church, and an Episcopal parish. Several other
churches followed.
Early newspapers were the Whitewater Gazette 1855, Whitewater Register,
1857, Register 1871, Puddingstick 1879, which later was changed to the
Whitewater Chronicle. and later the Gazette.
A library existed before 1858.
